Traditional Japanese Karate
Kuniba Kai is recognized in Japan and throughout the world as one of the leading exponents of Japanese Martial Arts. Students of this dojo are recognized in Japan and elsewhere as having attained a legitimate rank in Japanese Karate-do.
The Sensei or teachers at Kuniba Kai are licensed through Japan as instructors of Motobu-Ha Shito Ryu Karate-do. The licensing procedure is not just a byproduct of obtaining a black belt in Karate-do. It requires years of additional study and training. Many black belts, from other styles that open dojo, never complete the licensing requirements and are not granted a Shidoin (a title indicating that one is licensed). This is an important parameter to be considered by anyone interested in studying a Traditional martial art. The instructors at Kuniba Kai have over 60 years of marital arts training, with over 30 years of experience as certified instructors.
The style of karate taught is SHITO RYU. It is one of the five major styles of Karate-do taught in Japan. It is distinguished from other Japanese styles by its emphasis on proper technique versus power or strength. This factor makes it an ideal style for children and women, and can be devastating when coupled with the size and physical strength of some men.
Goshin-Do Self Defense
Goshin-do is a self-defense art developed by Soke Shogo Kuniba, 10th Dan. It combines his 50 years of training in Karate-do, Aikido, Ju Jitsu and Judo into self-defense techniques designed to control the attacker without the hard striking techniques of Karate-do.
The practice of Goshin-do involves the use of Kata (pre-arranged movements), and working with a partner to perfect the application of techniques. Emphasis is on joint locking, throwing and application of pressure to nerve points to ‘encourage’ the attacker to resist the urge to attack any further.
Kobudo
Kobudo is the art of ancient Okinawan weapons. When the Japanese first conquered the Okinawan kingdom, the Japanese occupation force took away the weapons of the native population such as swords, knives and spears. Only the Japanese Samurai were permitted to carry the sword. In response to this the Okinawans developed a secret fighting system, which allowed them to defend against the dreaded Japanese sword with typical farming implements. The fighting system developed using these farm implements is still taught today as modern Kobudo.
The weapons are the ‘Bo’ (six-foot staff), ‘Jo’ (four-foot staff), ‘Sai’ (small pitchfork), ‘Kama’ (sickle), ‘Tonfa’ (thresher) and ‘Nunchaku’ (thresher). A master armed only with a Jo, once defeated Miyamoto Mushashi, the greatest Japanese swordsman that ever lived.
